Tremolo is an effect that automatically makes the volume of the input signal go up and down, quickly. So it sounds kind of watery/wobbly. Kind of a classic guitar effect like on that Link Wray song "Rumble". But also a good, old-school psychedelic effect for vocals (eg. "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James), or synths.
